Check the field definition
Confirm whether remainder means undelivered quantity, still queued quantity, or another documented value. Some interfaces update fields at different stages. A number displayed during processing should not automatically be treated as the final amount that will never arrive.
Wait for a settled outcome
Review whether the order is still active and whether any stop or cancellation request has been accepted. Starting a replacement while the original can continue creates overlapping scope. Keep any confirmed credit separate from the quantity calculation.
Recalculate a replacement quote
Once the outstanding requirement is established, check current rates and minimum quantities for the replacement. The new purchase may cost more or less than the original proportional charge. Obtain approval if its scope or price changes.
Decision checklist
| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Definition | Meaning of remainder |
| State | Active or final |
| Replacement | Confirmed outstanding need |
Worked example
A hypothetical 2,000-unit order shows a remainder of 300 while still processing. If those 300 later arrive, an immediate replacement would overshoot the requirement. The useful next step is to establish the final status, not assume a 300-unit loss.
Example figures explain the decision; they are not current prices or promised results.
