Calculate each video separately
For planning, multiply the assumed views on each video by its assumed average viewing duration. Add those results only after keeping the units consistent. This produces a hypothetical duration estimate, not proof of actual delivery or platform eligibility.
Weight by the intended allocation
A short video receiving most of the views should influence the estimate more than a long video receiving very few. Taking the midpoint of two video lengths ignores this allocation. Write the assumptions beside each target so the calculation can be checked.
Keep measurement distinct
After the campaign, compare actual available reports with the planning assumptions. Do not replace observed duration with a calculated promise. If a service lists only view quantity, a weighted estimate should not be presented as included watch time.
Decision checklist
| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Inputs | Views and assumed duration for each video |
| Total | Sum of per-video viewing minutes |
| Interpretation | Planning estimate rather than delivered evidence |
Worked example
Assume 100 views averaging two minutes on one video and 300 averaging one minute on another. The estimate is 500 minutes across 400 views, or 1.25 minutes per view, rather than a simple 1.5-minute average.
Example figures explain the decision; they are not current prices or promised results.
